JWF ANNOUNCES SELECTION PROCESS FOR 2011 WORLD, 2012 OLYMPIC TEAMS

TOKYO (December 23) – The Japan Wrestling Federation decided on the selection process for its teams for the 2011 world championships in Istanbul and the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The selection process for next year's world meet in September will be fundamentally the same as in previous years. Winners at this month's All-Japan Championships who also win at the national invitational meet in April will qualify for the world team. If a wrestler other than the national champ wins at the invitational, a special wrestle-off will be held to determine the world team representative.

In the case of the three non-Olympic weight categories in the women's events, a national champ can punch her ticket for Istanbul by winning the invitational. If not, the women's national team committee will select a team member from among the two winners and other wrestlers in the Olympic weight categories.

As for the London Olympics, medal winners in the men's events in Istanbul and world champs in the women's events will be given the inside track for Olympic team selection, but the JWF will also consider results of competition after the 2011 world meet before making its choice.

Details of the selection process will be announced after confirmation from the men's and women's national team committees.
