JAPANESE WOMEN SLIP A STEP, MEN DENIED GOLD IN ASIA JRS

MANILA, Philippines (July 9-12) - Japanese women won three gold medals but slipped one notch in the team rankings, while the men were denied a gold medal for the second straight year at the Asian junior wrestling championships. Nodoka Nishi of Waseda University won at 48kg for her second Asia junior crown and was followed to the top of the medals podium by Ayaka Oyama (51kg) of Chukyo Women’s University and Shiori Tachihikari (63kg) of the Ohji Driving School.

The three gold medals is one less than a year ago for the Japanese juniors, as the women’s squad slipped from second to third place overall behind Kazakhstan and India.

In men’s freestyle, Fumitaka Morishita (55kg) from Kasumigaura high school In Ibaraki and Koki Tonomura (84kg) reached the championship finals, but were turned away as Japan was denied a gold medal in the men’s events for a second straight year. Tatsuya Nabatame (66kg) of Nihon University and Tomoyuki Oka (120kg) from Saitama’s Hanabuki Tokuei high school won bronze medals as the men’s freestylers showed a marked improvement over last year’s lone silver and bronze medals.

Meanwhile, the greco-roman squad struggled, getting only two individual victories from Tomoaki Nakano (55kg) of the Nippon Sports Science University and Gou Shiozaki (66kg) from Meiji University. Mashiu Yamada (50kg) of Hosei University and Junpei Konzai (74kg) from Aoyama Gakuin University each took fifth place by virtue of the draw, as both wrestlers went 0-2 in their two bouts.
