ANKARA (August 6) - Chiaki Fujikawa won four straight matches on her way to the silver medal and Yurika Ito claimed a bronze medal on the first day of women’s competition at the junior world wrestling championships. Fujikawa, who finished 14th a year ago, knocked off last year’s bronze medal winner from India and this year’s European junior runner-up from Russia before falling to American Victoria Anthony in the 44kg final.

At 59kg, Asia senior champion Ito lost to last year’s junior world champ at 63kg, Ekaterina Melnikova (RUS), but rebounded for the bronze medal with a win over Celeste Rodrigues (CAN).

Meanwhile, Chiaki Iijima opened with a pair of pins at 67kg, but was then tripped up in the semifinals and consolation finals, and had to settle for fifth place.

Former Asia cadet champion Ai Shimizu lost her opening bout at 51kg and did not get a chance at the repechage matches, settling for 15th place overall.
