KUDUKHOV, MAKHOV REGAIN WORLD TITLES, SOKHIEV CLAIMS 1ST MAJOR CROWN

HERNING, Denmark (September 21) ? Besik Kudukhov (RUS) and Bilyal Makhov (RUS) regained their positions as world champions while Zaurbek Sokhiev (UZB) claimed his first major title on the second day of the wrestling world championships in Herning.

Kudukhov dominated the field at 60kg to win his first title at that weight after winning the world title at 55kg in 2007 and the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Makhov, meanwhile, man-handled the opposition at 120kg for his second world title after health issues forced him to sit out last year’s Beijing Games.

Before this year’s world championships, Sokhiev was a bronze medal winner in 2006 and 2007, and a silver medalist at the Asian Games and Asian championships. The 23-year-old lawyer from Tashkent also finished ninth in Beijing.

In the gold medal final at 60kg, Kudukhov countered a single-leg attack by Zelimkhan Huseynov (AZE) for two points in the first period, then dropped the European champ to his back with a double-leg attack and lift for three points in the second.

At 84kg, Sokhiev and Jacob Herbert (USA) circled each other for most of four minutes with Sokhiev scoring a force-out point off a single-leg attack and taking the second from the clinch.

In the day’s finale, Makhov shoved four-time Asia champion Fardin Masoumi Valadi (IRI) around the mat and scored with six frontal force-outs in a style more often seen in sumo wrestling. Masoumi Valadi’s attempt to counter one force-out in the second period resulted in being dropped to his back for three points.
