TSARGUSH GIVES RUSSIA 4 TH GOLD IN MEN’S FS

HERNING, Denmark (September 23) ? Denis Tsargush (RUS) edged European champion Chamsulvara Chamsulvarayev (AZE) at 74kg to give Russia a fourth gold medal as the men’s freestyle competition came to an end at the wrestling world championships in Herning.

Women’s freestyle also got under way at Messecenter Herning with a handful of upsets and two new champions -- Mariya Stadnyk (AZE) and Sofia Mattsson (SWE) ? crowned at 48kg and 51kg, respectively.

In the men’s finale, Tsargush took the first period with a force-out and takedown counter, then narrowly avoided being taken down at the end of the second. Chamsulvarayev won the draw for the clinch, but Tsargush broke the grip with an American collegiate switch and held on until time ran out for the win.

Russia finished the tourney with four champions and 63 points for the team title. Azerbaijan was second with 48 points, followed by Iran with 40 points.

In the first final for women, Mariya Stadnik hit a double-leg attack just before the final bell to defeat Lorissa Oorzhak (RUS) and become Azerbaijan’s first world champion in female wrestling.

Stadnyk used to motion and a number of feints to keep Oorzhak off-balance throughout the final. Stadnyk scored with a low single and ankle turn in the first period, then waited until the very end of the second to slip through Oorzhak’s defenses and end the match with a picture-perfect double-leg.

In the evening’s finale, Mattsson completed a near-perfect day of wrestling with a double-leg attack with back exposure in the first period, then scored with a duck-under with back exposure in the second.

Mattsson’s triumph gave Sweden its first world champion in women’s wrestling since Sara Eriksson won the 75kg title in 1996.
