OLYMPIC WOMEN'S WRESTLING RESULTS - JAPAN (FINAL)




   ATHENS (August 23) - Results of bouts in the women's wrestling competition August 22-23 at Ano Liossia Olympic Hall:

48 kg (14 entries) - ICHO, Chiharu

F1 - Irini Merleni (UKR) df. Icho on criteria, 2-2, 9:00

   In a battle of world champions, Merleni opened the scoring with a fireman's carry and Icho answered with a takedown as the first period ended 1-1. Icho took the lead in the second period with a go-behind, but could
not get the third point to end the match in regulation. Merleni drew even, 2-2, with an underarm spin from the overtime clinch as the two battled evenly over the rest of extra time.

   Yoshida controlled the pace of the match from the outset, scoring with a single and a double for a 2-0 lead in the first period. Yoshida kept up the attack in the second period on the feet and on the mat for four more
points and the gold medal.

   Icho's problems with getting started continued as McMann grabbed a two-point lead in the first period. In the second period, however, Icho countered McMann's attempts successfully to knot the score 2-2. Icho scored
the all-important third point in the last 21 seconds with a snap down and go-behind.
